Fidel Cedes Power Print E-mail

Fidel Castro has officially given up power in Cuba, brother Raúl will be the interim president.  While many don’t expect much to happen with this change in power, Raúl has been pushing for reforms opposed by Fidel for years.  The new leader has pushed for private ownership of food markets, increased tourism.  In the past he has noted that he likes the Chinese model which would expand private business, but maintain a strong government.

Protests in Russia Print E-mail

An unusually large and unruly protest against the government of President Vladimir V. Putin ended here Saturday in clashes with the police and the arrest of opposition leaders. Rally organizers and the police said more than 100 people were arrested after a midafternoon scuffle between marchers and riot police on the main street, Nevsky Prospekt, in the heart of the city’s tourist district. St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, is Mr. Putin’s hometown.

Annan Has Farewell Message for US Print E-mail

Kofi Annan had some strong words Monday for the United States in his farewell speech as secretary-general of the United Nations. Throughout the address, given at the Truman Presidential Museum and Library, Annan invoked America's 33rd president to tell the United States, and implicitly its 43rd president, George W. Bush, how he thought they ought to behave.

Gay Rights in Canada Secure Print E-mail

Canada's House of Commons rejected a move Thursday by Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper to reopen debate on a national law permitting same-sex marriages. The House, by a vote of 175 to 123, defeated the motion brought by Harper to fulfill a campaign promise to opponents of same-sex marriage. Thirteen members of his Conservative Party voted against the motion, reflecting a desire by Parliament not to reopen the issue.

Beirut Demands Change Print E-mail

The official goal was to overthrow the government, but the atmosphere was bizarrely festive on Friday as hundreds of thousands of Hezbollah supporters poured into the center of Beirut, banging drums, chanting slogans, pressing shoulder to shoulder as they surged past army troops seeking to keep order. Families with little children, old people and young people, all heeded the call of Hezbollah, the Shiite Muslim party and militia, packing buses and cars all over the country. By nighttime, however, only several thousand demonstrators remained, smoking water pipes, playing music and vowing to stay, some in tents, until the Western-backed government fell.
