Hezbollah Leader Killed Print E-mail

Mughniyeh, in his late 40s, had been variously described as special operations or intelligence chief of Hezbollah's secretive military wing, the Islamic Resistance.  Correspondents say his death will be a significant blow to Hezbollah, which battled Israel in the 2006 Lebanon war, with help from its Iranian and Syrian backers.

Russian bomber buzzes U.S. carrier Print E-mail

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- American fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers, one of which buzzed a U.S. aircraft carrier in the western Pacific on Saturday, U.S. military officials told CNN Monday.  A Tupolev-95 flies over the Izu Islands, just south of Tokyo on Saturday.  Russia's Defense Ministry said Tuesday that there was no violation of flight regulations during the incident. A ministry official said the flights are standard operating procedure for air force training.

Iranian officials may think they have a lot to gain and not much to lose by defying the United Nations Security Council order to halt its uranium enrichment by Thursday, open its nuclear programs to international inspectors and return to the negotiating table.

Iran's hard-line president challenged the United Nations on Tuesday, two days before a Security Council ultimatum demanding his country roll back its suspect nuclear program, and instead proposed a televised debate with President Bush. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said no one can prevent Iran from pursuing what he called a peaceful nuclear program _ not even U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who was expected in Iran on Saturday.
