Bird Flu Hits Britain Print E-mail
Written by Reuters
Saturday, 03 February 2007
Britain scrambled to contain its first outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of bird flu in domestic poultry on Saturday after the virus was found at a farm run by Europe's biggest turkey producer. Some 2,500 turkeys have died since Thursday at the Bernard Matthews farm near Lowestoft in eastern England. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said all 159,000 turkeys on the farm would be culled. ``We're in new territory,'' National Farmers' Union Poultry Board chairman Charles Bourns told Reuters. ``We've every confidence in Defra but, until we know how this disease arrived, this is a very apprehensive time for all poultry farmers.''

Brain Drain in Iraq? Print E-mail

Dozens of Iraqi academics and their families have been attacked and killed by extremists in recent weeks in what human rights groups say is an effort to eliminate remaining intellectuals and skilled professionals -- and destroy whatever prospects might exist for establishing a functioning democratic society. As many as 250 Iraqi educators and other leading professionals have been assassinated since the US-led invasion in 2003, and thousands more have fled the country, according to researchers and human rights groups. Earlier this month authorities found the body of Dr. Najdat Al-Salihi , a psychology professor for 35 years at Mustansiriya University, in Baghdad. Salihi, who had disappeared three weeks earlier, was shot to death.

At the same time, the prevalence of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, among young people has declined in eight countries in Africa, showing that prevention efforts can work, United Nations officials said.

Friday, 17 November 2006
Sudan reversed its long-standing opposition to allowing U.N. peacekeepers within its borders, agreeing in principle to a plan that will permit an international force to bolster African troops in Darfur, one of the world's bloodiest conflict zones. Sudanese diplomats, meeting with African, Arab, European and U.N. leaders, said Thursday they needed to consult with their superiors in Khartoum before their government could give its unreserved approval to a revised peacekeeping plan.

Saddam to Hang Print E-mail
Written by STEVEN R. HURST and HAMZA HENDAWI
Sunday, 05 November 2006

An Iraqi court on Sunday sentenced Saddam Hussein to the gallows for crimes against humanity, closing a quarter-century-old chapter of violent suppression in this land of long memories, deep grudges and sectarian slaughter. The former Iraqi dictator and six subordinates were convicted and sentenced for the 1982 killings of 148 people in a single Shiite town after an attempt on his life there.  Shiites and Kurds, who had been tormented and killed in the tens of thousands under Saddam's iron rule, erupted in celebration - but looked ahead fearfully for a potential backlash from the Sunni insurgency that some believe could be a final shove into all-out civil war.
