Not since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001 resulted in the defeat of Taliban regime have the battle lines in Afghanistan been so clearly drawn as they have during the series of weekend clashed between the NATO led troops and the Taliban insurgents in Panjwayi district of the southern Kandahar province.

Violence in Darfur Print E-mail

With the Darfur peace accord stalled and the U.S. preoccupied in the Middle East, western Sudan is slipping back into a level of violence not seen for two years, diplomats and analysts say. A much-touted peace deal announced in May has only heightened hostilities by splintering rebel groups. And although Darfur has been the Bush administration's top priority in Africa, the point man on U.S. efforts to end the violence, Deputy Secretary of State Robert B. Zoellick, resigned in June, leaving those duties unfilled.

Bush: Hezbollah Loser Print E-mail

President Bush on Monday defended his handling of the war between Isreal and Hezbollah, declaring that Hezbollah had been the loser in the monthlong fight and warning Syria and Iran against resupplying the Lebanese militia.

Lebanon truce holds Print E-mail

As a truce between Israel and Hizbollah guerrillas entered its second day on Tuesday, planning got underway for a beefed up U.N. peacekeeping force to back the Lebanese army when it deploys to the south.  Ground clashes, Israeli air strikes and Hizbollah rocket fire ceased on Monday as the fragile truce took hold, encouraging droves of Lebanese refugees to return to southern villages devastated by the month-long war.

Iran must stop supporting armed groups trying to derail democracies in Iraq and Lebanon, President George W. Bush said on Monday, casting the war between Israel and Hizbollah guerrillas as part of a wider struggle against terrorism.  As a fragile truce took hold in southern Lebanon, Bush again squarely blamed Hizbollah for provoking the month-long conflict and said the group had suffered defeat.
