The Choice Between Obama and Clinton Print E-mail
Written by Michael Hamel
Friday, 08 February 2008
Those who are looking for a major policy shift in the US have been given two choices, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.  Interestingly there is no clear winner just yet, and even more interesting, we’re hearing more and more about people who can’t seem to make a choice between the two candidates...

Court Backs Abortion Ban Print E-mail
Written by William Branigin and Robert Barnes
Tuesday, 17 April 2007

The Supreme Court today narrowly upheld a nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure, handing a major victory to President Bush and his social conservative allies. In a 5-4 vote, the court ruled that the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, which Bush signed into law in 2003, does not violate a woman's right to have an abortion under the court's landmark 1973 ruling in Roe v. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives who was returning Saturday from a trip through the Middle East, said she thinks her mission helped President George W. Bush because it showed the United States is unified against terrorism despite being divided over Iraq. Bush and other Republicans have been on the attack since Pelosi met in Damascus, Syria, with President Bashar Assad, with whom the Bush administration refuses to have any dealings. Bush's complaints about the Damascus meeting have been frequent and strong.

Three Republican senators voiced fresh concerns on Sunday about Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales’s handling of the dismissals of eight United States attorneys amid questions about whether the firings were politically motivated. The comments, made in separate televised interviews by Republicans with histories of breaking with the White House, provided further indication of waning support for Mr. Gonzales where he needs it most, among fellow Republicans. Questions over Mr. Gonzales’s future intensified on both sides of the aisle this weekend, after the release of Justice Department documents late Friday that detailed plans for a meeting between Mr. Gonzales and his aides in which they discussed the dismissals last year, 10 days before most of them happened. Mr. Gonzales had previously said that he was “not involved in any discussions about what was going on” and that he had mostly followed the process from a distance.

Oil Money for Conservation? Print E-mail
Written by JOSEF HEBERT
Monday, 25 December 2006
House Democrats in the first weeks of the new Congress plan to establish a dedicated fund to promote renewable energy and conservation, using money from oil companies. That's only one legislative hit the oil industry is expected to take next year as a Congress run by Democrats is likely to show little sympathy to the cash-rich, high-profile business.  Whether the issue is rolling back tax breaks - some approved by Congress only 18 months ago - pushing for more use of ethanol and other biofuels instead of gasoline, or investigations into shortfalls in royalty payments to the government, oil industry lobbyists will spend most of their time playing defense.
