Rumsfeld Resigns PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 08 November 2006

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said Wednesday. Officials said Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, would replace Rumsfeld. The development occurred one day after midterm elections that cost Republicans control of the House, and possibly the Senate, as well. Surveys of voters at polling places said opposition to the war was a significant contributor to the Democratic victory.

Saddam to Hang PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 November 2006

An Iraqi court on Sunday sentenced Saddam Hussein to the gallows for crimes against humanity, closing a quarter-century-old chapter of violent suppression in this land of long memories, deep grudges and sectarian slaughter. The former Iraqi dictator and six subordinates were convicted and sentenced for the 1982 killings of 148 people in a single Shiite town after an attempt on his life there.  Shiites and Kurds, who had been tormented and killed in the tens of thousands under Saddam's iron rule, erupted in celebration - but looked ahead fearfully for a potential backlash from the Sunni insurgency that some believe could be a final shove into all-out civil war.

U.S. Web Archive Is Said to Reveal a Nuclear Primer PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 03 November 2006

Last March, the federal government set up a Web site to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war. The Bush administration did so under pressure from Congressional Republicans who had said they hoped to “leverage the Internet” to find new evidence of the prewar dangers posed by Saddam Hussein.  But in recent weeks, the site has posted some documents that weapons experts say are a danger themselves: detailed accounts of Iraq's secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war. The documents, the experts say, constitute a basic guide to building an atom bomb. Last night, the government shut down the Web site after The New York Times asked about complaints from weapons experts and arms-control officials. A spokesman for John Negroponte, the director of national intelligence, said access to the site had been suspended “pending a review to ensure its content is appropriate for public viewing.”

Taiwan's First Lady Indicted for Embezzlement PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 03 November 2006

The wife of Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian is being indicted on embezzlement and forgery charges, the country's chief prosecutor said Friday, and Chen himself is suspected of corruption but cannot be indicted because of presidential immunity. The announcement plunged Chen's already beleaguered presidency into doubt and led Taiwan's main opposition leader to demand an immediate resignation. Chen's own Democratic Progressive Party -- whose support is key to his future--did not reveal its stand immediately.
