The Supreme Court hears arguments this week in a case that could determine whether the Bush administration must change course in how it deals with the threat of global warming. A dozen states as well as environmental groups and large cities are trying to convince the court that the Environmental Protection Agency must regulate, as a matter of public health, the amount of carbon dioxide that comes from vehicles.

The AIDS pandemic is growing in all areas of the world, with worrisome signs of resurgence in some countries that were trumpeted as successes in combating the disease, the United Nations said yesterday. At the same time, the prevalence of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, among young people has declined in eight countries in Africa, showing that prevention efforts can work, United Nations officials said.

Democracy Out of Reach in Iraq PDF Print E-mail

Former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger, one of the Republican Party’s most respected senior statesmen, says that the Bush administration may have to give up on democracy in Iraq to salvage the goal of stabilising the country. Kissinger — who has frequently advised US President George Bush in the three years since the US invaded Iraq — told the Los Angeles Times that he believed democracy for now was out of reach for Iraq.

U.S. President George W. Bush may offer North Korean leader Kim Jong Il an official end to the Korean War as an incentive to persuade communist country's leader to scrap his nuclear weapons program. Bush said in a meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao the U.S. government ``can announce an official end to the Korean War,'' White House Press Secretary Tony Snow told reporters on Air Force One, traveling to Ho Chi Minh city from Hanoi yesterday, according to a transcript of his remarks. ``Certainly, President Hu seemed to think that that was a good way to proceed.''
