Fidel Castro has officially given up power in Cuba, brother Raúl will be the interim president. While many don’t expect much to happen with this change in power, Raúl has been pushing for reforms opposed by Fidel for years. The new leader has pushed for private ownership of food markets, increased tourism. In the past he has noted that he likes the Chinese model which would expand private business, but maintain a strong government. We need to challenge ourselves to deal with our energy and envoronmental crisis. One step in the right direction could be improving science and technology education. Another huge step in the right direction would be to ensure that we have the appropriate national priorities. We need to ensure that we are addressing our infrastructure needs appropriately, this includes encouraging increased use of renewable energy and public transportation through incentives, taxes, and credit training. We also need to improve our current energy production methods, such as cleaning up coal, and potentially rethinking the use of nuclear power. We have a high-tech advantage and we have a huge opportunity to create new manufacturing jobs in the environmental sector. Finally, we need to rethink the way we live and where we live. Sprawl is a huge issue that we need to deal with, creating more densy populated areas and reduced commute times, we can greatly reduce carbon emmissions, and increase the use of public transportation. Mughniyeh, in his late 40s, had been variously described as special operations or intelligence chief of Hezbollah's secretive military wing, the Islamic Resistance. Correspondents say his death will be a significant blow to Hezbollah, which battled Israel in the 2006 Lebanon war, with help from its Iranian and Syrian backers.
